Musicianship Exercises: Advanced Rhythm Studies

The following listening examples are derived from the compositions of Toronto-based composer Michael Smith, and are performed by his ensemble Muskox. The excerpts reproduced here are used with the permission of the composer.

It is suggested that students listen to the following examples and attempt to discern the meter, and then notate the subdivisions of the excerpts into groups of 2s and 3s. For example, a piece may be in 5/8, and divided into a 2-3 pattern.
